How Long Does ASO Take to Work?
Realistic timelines for App Store Optimization: how long re-indexing takes, when rank movement starts, and how long to wait before judging a metadata change.

App Store metadata is re-indexed in one to three days; Google Play takes a few days to two weeks. Rank movement follows over the next two to four weeks as the store gathers conversion data. Judge a change after four weeks — reverting at day nine is the most common self-inflicted ASO failure.
The most common ASO mistake is not choosing the wrong keywords. It is reverting a good change nine days after shipping it, because the numbers had not moved yet.
Here is what the timeline actually looks like.
Phase 1: Re-indexing (days 1–3, or 1–14)
Nothing can happen until the store has re-read your listing.
App Store. Metadata changes ride along with a version submission — see Apple’s product page guidance for which fields need a new build. Once the version is live, re-indexing typically completes within one to three days. Occasionally longer during peak submission periods — the weeks around a major OS release are noticeably slower.
Google Play. Store listing text can be updated without shipping a new bundle (Google’s metadata rules still apply), which is convenient, but re-indexing is slower and less predictable: anywhere from a few days to two weeks.
During this phase your rank for changed terms may be missing or erratic. That is expected and means nothing.
Phase 2: Initial movement (weeks 1–2)
Once indexed, you will appear for your new terms — usually at a position that reflects relevance but not yet performance. The store knows your listing mentions the term; it does not yet know whether people who search that term install your app.
Early positions in this phase are frequently pessimistic. An app that will settle at #8 often shows up at #30 first.
A dip is normal here. Changing metadata can briefly cost you positions on terms you already held, because the conversion history attached to your old listing no longer maps cleanly. This is where impatient developers revert, which throws away the change and the data.
Phase 3: Conversion data accumulates (weeks 2–4)
This is where rank actually settles. The store watches what happens when your app appears for a search: impressions, taps, installs, and whether those installs stick.
Terms where you convert well climb. Terms where you appear but nobody taps drift down — which is the store correctly telling you the keyword was not as relevant as you thought.
By the end of week four you have a reasonably honest picture.
Phase 4: Compounding (months 2–6)
If the change worked, it keeps working. Better positions produce more installs, which produce more ratings, which improve your standing on the signals that gate harder keywords. Terms that were out of reach in month one become plausible in month five.
This is the part that makes ASO worth doing at all, and the part nobody sees because they stopped measuring in week two.

Things that make it slower
- Very low install volume. The store needs conversion data to rank you. An app with 30 installs a week takes considerably longer to settle than one with 3,000.
- Highly competitive terms. Displacing an entrenched top ten takes months, not weeks, even when your metadata is right.
- Changing several things at once. Not slower in absolute terms, but it destroys attribution — you learn nothing, so you cannot compound.
- A new app with no history. The first two months of any app’s life are noisy. Establish a baseline before drawing conclusions.
Things that make it faster
- Existing install velocity. An app already getting installs gets evaluated faster.
- Long-tail terms. A difficulty-15 keyword can settle within two weeks. A difficulty-70 term may take a quarter.
- Google Play listing experiments. Play’s built-in A/B testing gives you conversion answers faster than waiting on organic rank.
- Shipping the change alongside a release you were making anyway. On the App Store this is the only way to update the keyword field, so batching is free.
How to judge honestly
Pick your evaluation window before you ship, and hold to it. Four weeks is the right default.
Then judge on the whole tracked set, not on your favourite keyword. A change that pushes one term from #14 to #9 while dropping four others out of the top 50 is a bad change, and looking only at the winner will hide that.
